If yes, then he was probably a keeper. It wasn't that hair and money was all that important to me but it was a way of getting at our blind spots.

My mom and I used to play this game when we would see someone (or I would date someone:)) who “seemed” to have it all but something was not quite right. So we’d say “take away the hair and the money…would you still be into him”. If the answer was no it usually just meant that the mask was more compelling than the reality. If yes, then he was probably a keeper. It wasn’t that hair and money was all that important to me but it was a way of getting at our blind spots. Sometimes we aren’t aware of what’s getting in our way of making clear assessments - in love or in life - so this was simply a way of clearing some cutter.

But this little game popped up in my head the other day when I was speaking with one of my clients. She was talking about some well known entrepreneurs and she referred to one of them as a brilliant marketer. I thought to myself, “huh, never thought of her like that.” (I don’t throw around the word brilliant very often though.) But I was curious about the comment so I decided to do a bunch of investigating. I have known about this person for years so it wasn’t too hard to follow the marketing trail. This is when I thought of the game. So, I thought, take away the hair, the makeup, the persona, the “appearance” and the lifestyle and would her following be the same. Not likely. Would the marketing has been as effective? Not likely. It wasn’t the marketing - the strategy - it was the person. (This is why there are tens of thousands of entrepreneurs that are all learning and applying the same principles but getting drastically different and often abysmal results.)

The truth is that a little bit of sexy and a little bit of marketing can go a long way. I call this “The Love Factor” and it has never been more activated than it is right now. Why? Because people are looking for connection. They are looking for people they can call their friends and for people who personify the lifestyle they dream about. They are simplifying and de-cluttering from the overload of information and messages and picking one or two people to model and the closer they get to thier chosen “models”, the closer they are to the dream.

Why are some people still filling events, selling out programs and attracting new (loyal) prospects when others who used to do the same are now feeling the pinch?

It’s the Love Factor.

When people move into constriction mode they become a lot more selective and it’s showing up everywhere right now. I can think of only about 5-10 people right off the top of my head who undoubtedly have “The Love Factor”. These are people who could send their followers a bag of poop and they’d think “Great , what should I do with it!” Obviously, that’s going a little far but you get my point. These people (many of whom are teaching ideas, strategies and principles that are readily found in thousands of other places) have followers who LOVE them. They stay on their lists, they buy their products, and join their programs not because their programs and ideas are truly ground-breaking but because there’s a little bit of marketing and a whole lot of sexy. These people have the MAGIC and once they do one thing that makes a splash, the dye is cast.

So, the question is, if you’re not so much feeling the love, how can you up your love factor? After years of observation and paying really close attention to what’s going on in the market TODAY, here are my best tips:

Package what you do in a completely unique way (marketing 101)

Package yourself in a way that pulls people to you (sexy 101)

Play up your very best physical qualities ALL the time (first impressions 101)

Be vulnerable, share your life, take care of your peeps, be generous, connect, love (love 101)

Smart marketing is certainly a piece of the puzzle but unless you’re a little bit sexy and a little bit rock and roll, you’ll never get the LOVE that will keep you at the top of the game.

I don't know about you but hearing "this is MINE but you can borrow it" doesn't sound terribly appealing. But this is essentially what many entrepreneurs are doing all day long in their marketing and wondering why the response is not better.

Here's the deal. A lot of the marketing materials out there include phrases such as: "I did this", "I created this", "I made this happen", putting the person who is offerring the product or service at the front of the story. Sure, you may be talking about something you discovered but the truth is if you really want to sell it you have to make your market know that it's a secret EVERYONE has access to. By everyone I don't mean you can't limit the amount you sell, but your can't horde a discovery and claim it as yours alone if you want people to buy in.

I don’t know about you but hearing “this is MINE but you can borrow it” doesn’t sound terribly appealing. But this is essentially what many entrepreneurs are doing all day long in their marketing and wondering why their response rate is not better.

Here’s the deal. A lot of the marketing materials out there include phrases such as: “I did this”, “I created this”, “I made this happen”, putting the person who is offerring the product or service at the front of the story. Sure, you may be talking about something you discovered but the truth is if you really want to sell it you have to make your market know that it’s a secret EVERYONE has access to. By everyone I don’t mean you can’t limit the amount you sell, but you can’t horde a discovery and claim it as yours alone if you want people to buy in.

I am not usually a big fan of visualizations, because I just haven’t found that they work that well for me, but one of my coaches offered this one to me and it really hit the mark so I want to share it with you. It’s designed to help you get out of your own way when it comes time to write your marketing materials or communicate in person or on stage with your target market.

So, imagine what you have to offer, whether a product or service, and just put it in your mind’s eye. Now put your palms facing up out in front of you. Now place whatever idea, product or service you have into your palms, as though you’re holding a ball. The ball now represents the value or service you have to offer.

Now imagine what happens if you take that ball and you either try to ram it down someone’s throat and say “here’s what you need and you’ve got to accept this.” Or, if you hold it up and say “It’s my ball. You can only have it if you play by my rules.” Neither scenario sounds very effective but that’s what a lot of people are doing when they are trying to offer a product or service. They are saying “This is mine, I discovered it and you can’t have it unless you pay me.” You MAY be the only place they can get this product or service but offering it up like that is going to create a lot of negative response from your market. The fact is, when you say something is yours and you say things like “my secret, my program” etc. the best any of your customers will ever be able to do with it is borrow it. And when it comes to laying out their money, that’s simply not good enough.

The other thing people do is they decide that other people really need it so they try and run after them with the ball and ram it down their throat instead of allowing them to come to the point where they realize it is beneficial and then asking YOU for it. Frank Kern is probably the best person I know at doing this. He just tells you what he has, tells you how great it has worked for him, and he holds his products up as information to be shared. And when he’s done talking about this cool thing he’s discovered and tested, you’re begging for him to try and “sell you”.

And that’s what we all want right? We want to PULL people in. Not ram it down their throat or horde it.

So, now take the imaginary ball you are holding out in front and shift it to just your left hand. Next lift your left hand way up and then let the ball go. Imagine a colored balloon now just floating away high into the sky. You’ve taken what you’ve discovered and let it go. Now, imagine your client or potential customer is standing right in front of you and you both look up as this balloon floats all the way up until it basically becomes the moon. As you are both looking up at the moon you’re communicating this to them: “Huh, take a look at that. Isn’t that amazing? Isn’t that wonderful? Have you ever seen something so incredible before?”

When you do that you are effectivley taking the 3rd party perspective. It’s not YOUR product, YOUR secret, or YOUR thing. You’re just describing it and talking about how you feel about it to the person you’re talking to. What we want to know from this is whether or not they resonate with it and if so, how they can truly have it for themselves. If they don’t resonate with it, then they are not part of your market.

The idea is to be a reporter talking about this secret you stumbled upon. It’s not YOUR secret but the secret you’ve discovered that you want to SHARE.

So imagine these 2 different stories:

One person goes out and they discover something that is able to do this magical thing. This doo-hicky, and they say “This is MINE and you can’t have any access to it unless you pay me what I want.”

The other person goes out and says, “Look at this amazing doo-hicky that I’ve discovered. It does all of these incredible things. Wouldn’t you be interested in sharing in this too?”

It’s a subtle shift but it’s profoundly powerful and it will have a significant impact on your results.

When you do this, when you communicate about your product or service like this, it’s like each time you are looking at it you are experiencing it for the first time too and they will be attracted to the joy and the excitement you feel as well. In this way, people are getting exactly what they want in a way that feels effortless.

So, next time you sit down to write some copy or plan a talk, think about this balloon, 3rd party reporting, and providing the excitement necessary to PULL people in who can’t wait to SHARE in your discovery.

I was working with a client today when I was reminded of a mantra one of my favorite coaches of all time, Graham White, shared with me. Actually, I think he learned it from Harv Ecker when he was running Peak Potentials. Anyway his mantra became “Don’t let that take you out.”

As entrepreneurs we all have things that take us out. Here are the things that seem to take my clients (and me) “out” most often:

1. Having the thought “What if it doesn’t work?”

2. Monitoring other people’s opinions.

3. Believing the thought “I’m not good enough.”

4. Thinking “It’s going to be soooo hard.”

5. Believing “I don’t have the time.”

6. Thinking “somebody else is already doing what I want to do and there’s not enough to go around.”

7. Thinking I hate marketing and selling.

8. Believing I don’t know enough or have enough experience to do what I want.

9. Deciding for other people how much they can pay me.

10. Thinking I don’t have enough value.

I could go on and on and I’m sure you have some doozies youcould add to the list too. But the important thing to remember is to NOT let those things take you out.

One of things that allows us to let something take us out is our lack of action. When you have an idea and you act fast, there’s no time to talk yourself out of it or let those thoughts (that aren’t really yours to begin with) take hold. The fact is there is no later. It’s not going to be any more perfect or any more exciting days, weeks or months from now. It will just be another idea that never got put into place and one more thing that took you out.

Get IN, get moving and stay in action.

So, when I saw it again the other day on my way to the metaphysical section of Barnes and Noble, I started to make a list of all of the logical REASONS to be happy for no reason.

The book Happy for No Reason by Marci Shimoff keeps popping up around me and while I haven’t read it, the title certainly catches my eye.

So, when I saw it again the other day on my way to the metaphysical section of Barnes and Noble, I started to make a list of all of the logical REASONS to be happy for no reason.

My list was short. In fact, there was nothing on it. My left brain simply could not get behind the idea. That’s because it’s the part of my brain that loves to reason, loves to offer rational and analytical explanations for things.

This made me immediately think of someone I am very close to who is as tight as nails with the left side of his brain. He would no more pick up the book “Happy for No Reason” than he would jump out of a speeding car on the highway. Neither makes sense to him on any level.

On the other hand, my right brain was dying to get in on the action. When I imagined a 200 page booked filled with text about how to be happy for no reason my intuition made it obvious to me what was on the pages. (It doesn’t matter that I have never opened the book and really have no idea what it is about.) The fact is, I have no trouble grasping things that I can’t really make a logical argument for.

I bought into it. Can I Be happy for No Reason? Of course I thought.

So, what does this have to do with you and your business?

Sometimes we get caught working from one side of our brain. Men seem to do this more than women but when we are involved in activities that require a lot of left brain activities like analyzing our books, crunching numbers, hiring a team, organizing our office, etc., we can get stuck when it’s time to work on the vision we have for our business.

So here’s what one of my mentors suggested to me when I was spending a little too much time, for my own good, dealing with the details and in go, go, go, mode and was failing to realize the vision I once had for my business.

She said to actually make time for both to have their say. Meaning, take a few hours to daydream, create, write, reach out to strangers for no reason, etc.

Then, do the same for the other. Manage, organize, analyze and make logical and reasonable decisions about my business.

By creating time and an opportunity for BOTH ways of thinking and BEING to create results, my business wouldn’t get top heavy and eventually topple to the ground.

Sometimes we assume that our brain is just doing its job and we have no way to control how it takes in and processes information. But I don’t think that’s the case. In fact, I think if way back when, when we were in school, our teachers told us (and taught us how) to go out into the playground and find a quiet place during class to just daydream and build up our creative and way out there thinking type muscles, it would have become second nature to us and we’d have a lot more people today who were walking around simply happy for no reason.
